Cables 0 Curzon 1

All is well. The sun is shining, the sky is cloudless, the pitch is a verdant green, the Cables flags are out, Cables are back after a gritty cup win at Chorley and we can see how Cables fare against one of the league’s fancied teams. This season Cables seem to fare better when least is expected of them, but go to a windy or rainy Atherton or Rossendale and they seem to implode.

As it happens Cables give Curzon the proverbial game-and-a-half. A tight, space-free affair with both sides stingier than Scrooge after his bank overdraft has been cancelled.Curzon have a couple of first half chances, Cables miss the best chance of the first half when Phil Green’s composure fails to match his pace and he shins wide with the goal gaping. No doubt Curzon are the more measured on the ball in the middle third of the pitch, thankfully Cables’ defence are more than up to the challenge of subduing any runners from the midfield.

The second half picks up where the first half ended.Curzon have a couple f pops at Cables goal. One effort is blazed wildly over the bar from barely six yards to set the alarm bells ringing. At the other end Cables Phil Green breaches the Curzon offside trap a second time to find himself one on one with the Curzon Keeper. His effort is low and firm but straight at the keeper who blocks with his outstretched legs. Just as Cables are building a bit of momentum disaster strikes, a right wing cross evades everyone including Andy Paxton in the Cables goal – but not Curzon’s Michael Norton.Norton heads into the unguarded goal to break the seemingly permanent deadlock.

There’s still time for Cables to squander one last golden chance to score as John Riley heads Tony Sayer’s cross over the Curzon bar from barely three yards out.The ref- who had been a fusspot of epic proportions, wastes no time in blowing his whistle to end the game. Gutted, more gutted than I’ve been for a long time at a Cables game, not at the result but at the injustice of a good display going unrewarded.
